We starting the search for people with relevant experience and expertise who would like to volunteer their time as part of the Make, Do and Mend work stream of our organisation. We're hoping to get started in Spring of 2020.
Are you great at fixing things and happy to show others too?
The repair skills of household objects of the older generation are at risk of being lost. This is happening at the same time as society is becoming more aware of reusing, repairing and re-purposing items before they are recycled or disposed of.
We would like to plan a series of events to bring those with the skills together with those who are keen to learn. We envisage workshops (Make) where people can be taught how to make items so that they can reduce waste e.g. produce bags, reusable cleansing wipes etc.
We hope to very soon start an upcycling project (Do) where people can be taught about updating and redesigning clothes, the young people are particularly keen on this idea, e.g. upcycling second‐hand prom dresses and waistcoats.
The other aspect of this project is the repair sessions (Mend) where local people can bring along items that are no longer working and be taught how to repair them alongside a local volunteer expert. The whole project is being enthusiastically entered into with local folk from charities, including those dealing with older people, uniformed youth organisations, businesses, churches, schools, Councillors and environmentalists and has a strong social media presence.
