Volunteer Peer Supporter

Working on a one-to-one or group basis, you will be supporting service users with their mental well-being. This might take place in the local community, or at one of our staffed mental health projects. A kind, empathetic and non-judgmental approach is essential, along with the ability to draw on some of your own experiences of managing your mental health or of using mental health services.

Your own well-being is paramount to us and you will be supported on your volunteer journey by a dedicated Peer Support Coordinator, who will meet with you regularly on a face-to-face basis and who will be on hand to answer any questions you might have during the working day.

Our Peer Support service is highly valued by our service users and Peer Supporters regularly feed back to us that the role is vital in helping them to engage positively with others in their local community.

There is a mandatory 3-day training course that you will need to attend, which will help you to further understand how the role fits into the organisation as a whole and with Together’s values. Opportunities are available in Lymington, Hythe, Totton and across the New Forest area.

Skills

The only experience required is that you currently or have previously used mental health services and that you are prepared to draw on some of your own experiences of managing your mental health in order to support others. Empathy and effective listening skills are essential along with an open, non-judgmental approach to providing support. Our service users are from all walks of life and we welcome applications or interest from all areas of the community to mirror this. You don’t need to have all the answers; just a willingness to listen and to offer advice where you can. You can offer as much or as little of your time as you wish and you will be supported throughout by a dedicated Peer Support Coordinator.
