Volunteering at St Barbe gives an opportunity to work within the local community and to be an ambassador for the Museum. Volunteer stewards are the public face of the Museum, and help visitors to Lymington and St Barbe to make the most of their time at the Museum and to enjoy the exhibitions.
St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery is an independent organisation governed by the Lymington Museum Trust, a registered charity (no 1018779). The Museum tells the story of Lymington - its development as a market town and port, along with the growth of nearby communities on the Solent coast. The Art Galleries host a programme of exhibitions that regularly include works on loan from national and regional collections. The Museum is also home to a Visitor Information Point and shop.
Key tasks for stewards include:
* Welcoming visitors to the Museum and the Art Galleries * Getting to know the Museum displays and helping visitors to find what will interest them * Becoming familiar with each Gallery exhibition * Being familiar with children's activity quizzes, and where to find the answers * Providing security for Museum and Art Gallery exhibits * Ensuring visitors' comfort and security.
*Dealing with the public in an outgoing and friendly way, but being assertive if required *Being alert to the visitors that are in the Museum and Galleries and being ready to engage with them if they wish to talk to a steward *Working as part of a team *Being an ambassador for the Museum *Having an interest in local history and the visual arts *Taking a proactive approach to building up knowledge about the Museum and each exhibition.

When can I volunteer?
Start Date: 01/08/2019
End Date: 01/08/2022
Volunteers sessions are 10 - 1.30 or 1.30 - 5 on Monday to Saturday, 10 - 1 or 1 - 4 on Sunday. We ask regular volunteers to commit to at least one session every two weeks, preferably weekly. At the moment we particularly need volunteers who can work at weekends - half day either Saturday or Sunday. We also have some weekday vacancies and a few vacancies on our "Bank" of volunteers who can fill ad hoc vacancies to cover for holidays/illness etc.
