Volunteering at St Barbe gives an opportunity to work within the local community and to be an ambassador for the Museum. Volunteers are the public face of the Museum, and help visitors to Lymington and St Barbe to make the most of their time in the area and to enjoy the exhibitions.
St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery is an independent organisation governed by the Lymington Museum Trust, a registered charity (no 1018779). The Museum tells the story of Lymington - its development as a market town and port, along with the growth of nearby communities on the Solent coast. The Art Galleries host a programme of exhibitions that regularly include works on loan from national and regional collections. The Museum is also home to a Visitor Information Point and shop.
Key tasks for volunteers include:
*Welcoming visitors to the Museum and telling them about what they can see and do at St Barbe *Taking admission fees *Selling gifts, cards, books, maps and parking clocks *Encouraging visitors to become Friends of the Museum *Advising visitors on what to see in Lymington and the New Forest, and along the coast.
* Dealing with the public in an outgoing and friendly way * Working as part of a team * Being an ambassador for the Museum * Having an interest in information about the local area and its history * Helping visitors to the area * Using an electronic shop till and card machine confidently (training will be given).

When can I volunteer?
Start Date: 01/08/2019
End Date: 01/08/2022
Volunteers sessions are 10 - 1.30 or 1.30 - 5 on Monday to Saturday, 10 - 1 and 1 - 4 on Sunday. We ask regular volunteers to commit to at least one session every two weeks, preferably weekly. At the moment we particularly need volunteers who can work at weekends - half day either Saturday or Sunday. We also have some weekday vacancies and also vacancies on our "Bank" of volunteers who can fill ad hoc vacancies to cover for holidays/illness etc.
