Shopping Volunteer (Basingstoke and/or East Hampshire)

What would I be doing as a care home shopping volunteer?

The aim of our care home shopping volunteers is to provide support for the home by going shopping for residents or by running a simple onsite shop for residents. You may also be asked to collect online orders and drop this at reception for residents. You will need to take into account social distancing to protect yourself and the residents.

What impact would I have?

Going to a supermarket seems really simple, but this could really make a difference to an older person who can no longer leave the home or for a resident whose family can no longer visit with shopping. Our shopping volunteers have become increasingly important during the Covid-19 outbreak as people need to stay indoors. We’re looking for people who have the following skills and qualities:

  • Organised, reliable and punctual.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Basic numeracy.
  • Able to take instruction and direction.
  • Mindful of infection control and good hygiene at all times.
  • An understanding of the needs of older people.
  • Flexible.
  • Trustworthy and honest.
  • Enjoy working with older people.
  • It would be beneficial if you were a driver with access to a car, but this isn’t necessary (keep to necessary government guidelines, social distancing if you are using public transport or walking).

Why volunteer for MHA?

If you are passionate about caring for older people, MHA is the place for you. We are a national charity inspiring the best care at every stage of later life. It is our mission to enable people to live later life well and you could help us achieve this. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, this is more important than ever and we need help in order to keep up the levels of excellent care that we provide.

Our volunteers are making a difference every day

One of our care home volunteers felt so welcomed by the care home team, she kept coming back!

“I enjoyed talking to residents, singing songs with them and joining in activities. Eventually I felt confident enough to apply for a carer job at a home. I know that the experience I gained helped me in my new job. When I have time off I still like to call in as a volunteer whenever I can and I am always made so welcome”.
