Do you want to volunteer and become a Veteran Peer Mentor with the Probation Service in South Central Region Hampshire & IOW?
Do you have 3 hours per week free time to mentor Ex-Forces Personnel within the Criminal Justice System?
Many Forces Personnel find it very difficult to rehabilitate back into society and some end up on Probation orders or in prison.
The role of the Mentor will be to work with the individual, providing them with practical and personal support.
If you are interested in becoming a Veteran Peer Mentor, then we would like to hear from you. Volunteers will go on to a full 3-day training course. All volunteers are formally vetted through the Civil Service vetting process.
The Mentor will act as a facilitator in helping the individual to come to terms with life back in the community make new friends and assist the Probation Service in making their transition a little easier.
N.B. Volunteers should be aged 18 or over for this role and served in the armed forces.
Skills
Personal skills:
- Listening
- Non judgmental
- Approachable and friendly
- Possibly some counselling skills
- Some spare time on their hands
- Have a genuine desire to help
Other:
- May involve some time spent with client in the evening.
- Ideally the Mentor will have a good knowledge of the area they live in, where the leisure facilities are and possible Ex Forces Associations.
- They will have made a successful transition into civilian life, but also may have found it difficult initially.
- They will have to be good role models, so probably holding down a steady job, or semi retired.
