Winchester Go LD is a charity for adults with a learning disability, living in Winchester and the surrounding district.
We launched our Walk and Talk sessions in 2020 in response to the first lockdown. It proved to be very successful and a popular way to socially engage with our members. It has increased physical and mental wellbeing, supported our members and also provided carers with respite.
The programme matches members with volunteers, who provide support and conversation during each Walk & Talk. The value of the service really enhances with time, as the relationships between volunteers and members grow with every walk.
This is a fun and interesting opportunity based in Winchester. Volunteers can expect a commitment of a minimum of 1 hour, weekly, fortnightly or monthly in addition to 2-3 volunteer meetings and training sessions throughout the year. Walk & Talks are usually offered on weekdays only, with flexible timings available, that will suit a broad range of volunteer and member availability.
We are looking for friendly individuals with empathy, with some understanding and preferably experience of the needs of people with a learning disability; good communication skills as well as a sense of fun! Flexibility would be an advantage.
Skills
We are ideally looking for someone who has experience in working with vulnerable people. This might be from experience gained volunteering in a similar role, through your work role, or through the experience you have gained in your personal life. Our volunteers bring their own experiences and knowledge to the role, adding enormously to the lives of our members.
We are seeking volunteers who enjoy meeting people, are caring, sociable, empathetic and understanding of the issues that may affect the lives of our members. It's important that you can demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively and to actively listen.
An understanding of data protection and equal opportunities is desirable.
