The Home Library Service delivers books to people who find it difficult to get to the local library due to health or mobility issues or carer commitments. This is done via doorstep delivery during Covid 19.
We are currently very keen to hear from people in the Totton or Lyndhurst areas that may be interested and willing to deliver books to people in Lyndhurst now the library has closed.
Description of the role:
The Home Library Service provides library material to people who are unable to make a personal visit to their local library and have no-one else suitable to do it for them.
Library volunteers help the Home Library Service by selecting and delivering material to customers and so a personal interest in reading is recommended. The volunteer will usually select, deliver and return books for 2-5 customers on a monthly basis.
All applicants must be aged 18 or over.
The role includes some lifting and carrying of library material. Instruction in basic manual handling techniques is given to all volunteers.
We ask that all our volunteers are able to commit to a minimum of one visit per month for at least 2 or up to 5 customers. The date and time of the visit will be agreed between the volunteer and the customer.
If unable to complete a scheduled visit, the volunteer should contact the local library so that we can advise the customers.
In order to fulfil our duty to check the Right to Work, you must provide an original version of a Passport, UK Residence Permit or Home Immigration Status document.
The role also requires a DBS check. This can be completed online. Once appointed, a head and shoulders photograph needs to be provided so that an identification card can be issued to the volunteer and worn when carrying out the role. The card remains the property of Hampshire County Council and must be returned on request.
Volunteers using their car as part of their role will need to have a valid driving licence and appropriate insurance subject to annual checks.
Any reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed but must be agreed in advance with the local library management team.
