We’re looking for enthusiastic, friendly and self-motivated people to be the main point of contact for visitors to Hampshire Cultural Trust venues in Winchester, to help ensure high standards of customer service are maintained at all times.
You’ll be the first point of contact for our visitors. Your passion for heritage, arts and culture will help you provide excellent customer service across all areas of the visitor experience, allowing each individual to get the most from our exhibits. You’ll also be given the chance to get hands on with history by helping with our events and educational workshops.
Working closely with the Duty Manager and museum staff, you will help us by:
- Welcoming visitors to the venues, answering their questions about the exhibits and about Winchester
- Monitor the galleries
- Sell admission tickets
- Promote donations and Gift Aid, and support with fundraising events
- Serve customers in our gift shop
- Gather visitor feedback
- Help facilitate workshops and family activities
- Support the museum staff with general housekeeping, cleaning and health and safety duties
You don’t need to have worked in a museum or gallery before. You just need to be friendly, approachable and comfortable interacting with other people. Customer service and cash handling experience is desirable but not essential.
Volunteering with us is a great way to learn new skills and gain valuable experience of front-line museum work. It is also a great way to meet new, like-minded people.
As well as receiving a tour of our venues and exhibitions, we will provide you with any training that you need to welcome our visitors and support the museum and gallery staff.
Ideally you should be able to give a couple of hours up to 1-2 days per week. This can be flexible and fit around your other commitments.
Hampshire Cultural Trust & our venues:
Hampshire Cultural Trust was established as an independent charity in 2014 to promote Hampshire as a county that offers outstanding cultural experiences to both its residents and visitors. From museums to galleries to arts centres, we manage and support 23 attractions across the county that were previously operated by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council.
In Winchester the trust operate 4 spaces: City Museum, Westgate Museum and The Gallery and City Space (which are found within Winchester Discovery Centre).
You can find out more about the trust and our venues by visiting our website: www.hampshireculture.org.uk
We are flexible about which site you volunteer at. You may wish to volunteer across multiple sites, or you may wish to spend your time at just one. To support museum and gallery staff during busy periods, on occasion, we may need you to help at a venue which is not your usual base.
- Be friendly, approachable and comfortable interacting with people.
- Have an interest in museums, culture, heritage, history or archaeology.
Desirable qualities and skills:
