We require volunteers for a brand new anonymous email support service launching early Summer 2021.
The volunteer will work as part of a team and will write responses to emails received, which will then be reviewed by a second person before sending.
Seafarers can often be very isolated, thousands of miles
away from their friends and family. If they are experiencing harassment
or abuse on board they are trapped with their abuser. We aim to relieve
some of the isolation and distress felt by seafarers in this situation,
by providing a point of contact for support and information.
In-house training will be provided in order to develop an understanding of the maritime industry, the Merchant Navy, and life at sea. Sexual violence specific training will be conducted by a Rape Crisis Centre, volunteers must attend this before they can start responding to emails. This training will provide an overview of sexual violence, trauma, coping strategies and responding effectively by email.
The ideal volunteer would have previous experience in a listening role, eg. as a counsellor, a helpline volunteer, a mentor, or other similar role. They would be calm, compassionate and able to communicate with the service user in a non-judgmental way. A background working/volunteering in or with sexual violence services would be advantageous but is not required.
Volunteering will be carried out from home, so volunteers will need access to a device on which they can respond to emails and attend Zoom sessions. They will also need to be able to travel to supervision sessions in Fareham once a month.
This is a very new organisation with limited funds available for training volunteers, so we are ideally looking for volunteers who can commit for at least 12 months.
The training conducted by the Rape Crisis Service will be a one-off commitment, but will probably be conducted over 3 half-days during the week (on Zoom). Dates are not yet confirmed but volunteers must be able to attend all 3 sessions before they can start the role.
