As a member of the organising committee you would be on duty as Coordinator on a rota with about 5 or 6 other Coordinators for a week at a time, on a week to be agreed by everybody at the quarterly committee meetings. So this would be about 9 weeks of the year.
The role is to match requested drivers to medical appointments or for regular shopping/health classes with drivers.
You need to be able to manage a spreadsheet held in Google Docs, which is visible to all Coordinators. So you would need IT skills equivalent to CLAIT. EG data entry, cutting and pasting, printing, handling different sheets within the document.
A kind, sympathetic and patient telephone manner is essential as we deal with people who may be quite ill or worried about their transport needs. Sometimes we take people with dementia with their carer. Sometimes patients are very deaf, which can be challenging, so we sometimes use text messages then.
You need to be able to manage a group email of all the drivers, and send out requests to them after you receive them at 12.30pm and 3.30pm Mon - Fri during the week you are on duty.
When you can't fill a job from replies to the group email then you will need to telephone round the drivers to fill the jobs. A worksheet is kept for this purpose. Telephone expenses will be reimbursed.
Your telephone number will be given as the emergency number when you are on duty out of office hours and at weekends. Office hours are 10 - 4pm Mon - Fri.
It would be helpful if you lived in Petersfield or very nearby and have a knowledge of the road names and where they are, so that you can deal with any problem from your experience as you may not necessarily be one of our drivers as well. Sorting out problems according to our set policies is also needed when they arise. So a sensible and firm but kind manner is then needed.
You would receive full training from a current Coordinator. You will find that this is a very rewarding and fulfilling voluntary job, but it does require full commitment during the week that you are on duty. You may receive about 30 - 45 requests per week.
