Volunteers Week 2018: Come and get involved!

30 May 2018

Community First is taking part in Volunteers’ Week, which will take place nationwide from 1-7 June. For Volunteers’ Week, we want to not only celebrate the contributions of 23 million volunteers nationwide, but to help even more people get involved with their local communities – to help themselves while helping others. We will be providing opportunities to try out volunteering and to find out more about volunteering in your community.

Give volunteering a go…

Create a community garden from scratch at the Wickham Centre
Friday 8th June, 9:30-13:30
The Wickham Centre, Mill Lane, Wickham, PO17 5AL

We will be closing the week with an opportunity to get involved to help create a community garden from scratch at The Wickham Centre.

The event is supporting a local initiative called The Project, which saves out of date supermarket food from going to landfill. The community garden you’ll help to create will benefit the less fortunate in the surrounding communities, through growing a range of fruit & vegetables. The task will involve a range of gardening activities such as preparing beds and planting, but could also include helping with maintenance and day-to-day tasks.

The community garden will allow local residents to grow vegetables which will be available to everyone in the local area. A selection of the food rescued from going to landfill will also be available on the day. With many volunteers already signed up and local MPs in attendance, it’s going to be a vibrant day of volunteering for a great cause and meeting others from local communities. More help is needed, however, and there will be a role for everyone.

Positive Pathways at Tesco in Havant
Monday 4th June, 10am-1pm
Tesco Extra, Solent Road, Havant, PO9 1TR

Volunteers from Community First’s supported volunteer team, Positive Pathways, will be at Tesco in Havant on Monday 4th June from 10am to 1pm, to celebrate the start of Volunteers’ Week. Positive Pathways is a supported Volunteering project which helps those that need initial support to volunteer and works with them to improve social, communication and practical skills to help them become more involved in their local community, reducing isolation and improving well-being.

Volunteers, many of them recovering from a long period of ill health, will be on hand to chat to members of the public about their experience of volunteering and how it has helped them as well as promoting volunteering and answering questions.  Local volunteer opportunities will also be displayed and details can be passed on to the organisation for those expressing an interest.
