IT consultants volunteer to help on the Watercress Line

6 January 2016

A team of IT Consultants from cDecisions volunteered their time to spend the day carrying out conservation tasks at the Watercress Line Steam Railway, Alresford. This is the first team volunteering day organised by Community First in the Winchester area and is part of the Employee Volunteering Scheme. Janet Duggan from Community First says “we are so excited to be working with businesses from the Winchester area to be able to support charities and voluntary organisations locally. cDecisions approached us to organise a team building volunteering day that will allow their staff to spend the day working as a team whilst carrying out practical tasks, making a difference to a charity. Individuals or teams of volunteers have such a big impact on community groups as without them many charities would fold. I would like to thank cDecisions for giving their staff the opportunity to volunteer their time”.

The Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line runs along the edge of the South Downs National Park, opening in 1865. The picturesque Alresford station is located 7 miles from Winchester and is the start of the heritage railway finishing in Alton. The railway currently operates regular scheduled services and holds special events throughout the year. Volunteers provide an essential service to the Railway with over 400 supporting the small number of paid staff.

Joel Versluys, Company Director of cDecisions says “we are so pleased to be able to spend the day helping to restore part of the area by cutting back overgrowth and planting bulbs in front of the Station building. By volunteering our time we hope this will go some small way to supporting the great work the Watercress Line do by keeping alive steam railways in the local area. Our team at cDecisions have really enjoyed the day and recommend any businesses looking to volunteer to contact Community First”.
